Tabor glared at Elaise, fury radiating off him in waves. Elaise noticed the healers were giving Tabor as wide a berth as possible—some even left the tent altogether when Elaise started speaking. Even in his injured state, Tabor was an intimidating opponent.

She had known Tabor wouldn’t like what she had to say. His anger was completely expected, and Elaise was empathetic. She would likely feel the same way in his situation. That did not, however, make it any easier to give the orders.

“I talked to Bane’s man,” Tabor argued heatedly. “I arranged the meeting. You can’t seriously expect me to stay behind, cowering like a little child. I’m not a bloody invalid, Commander.”

Elaise rubbed her temple wearily. “I know, Tabor. No one thinks of you as an invalid. But, your injuries were very extensive—so extensive that Thea says you’re lucky to have survived at all. You nearly cracked your skull in half. If you go on this mission, you will die.”

“I’m willing to take that risk.” He folded his arms stubbornly. Elaise could see him make a valiant effort not to wince as the movement caused pain to shoot into his head.

“I’m not,” Elaise said definitively. “Tabor, we can’t afford to lose you too. I know you want to go with the others—believe me, I know. But you won’t do any good to anyone if you die. Not only that,” She hurried on, cutting Tabor off as he tried interrupt, “But I also can’t have the others constantly worried about your well-being. You might not be concerned about your survival, but they will be and so will want to take things slow. We need to complete this mission quickly, with as few complications as possible.”

“What if Bane retracts his offer, since I didn’t go to meet him?” Tabor countered, his scowl deepening. “He won’t like that I’m not there to make the deal.”

“Was that one of the requirements for the trade?” Elaise asked. “You never mentioned that before.”

Tabor hesitated before speaking. “Yes, it was.”

Elaise could tell Tabor wasn’t being truthful. “Nice try,” She shook her head. “But you aren’t going anywhere. Davin and Amara are both familiar with Narin—and Amara knows Bane personally. I have the utmost confidence she can convince Bane to help us.”

“But, Commander—”

“You are not going on the mission. If you continue to argue, I’ll have Thea knock you out for a week.”

Tabor sighed, still looking unhappy, but Elaise knew she had finally won.

“Get some rest, Tabor,” she said, standing to leave. “I promise you will have plenty of other missions to go on once you’ve healed.”

He fixed her with a furious glare. “I’ll hold you to that.”

“I don’t doubt you will.”

Elaise left the tent a moment later. She wished she were as confident in this plan as she pretended. Elaise believed it was possible Bane actually wanted to help them—Tabor wouldn’t have insisted on it if he didn’t trust the man’s intentions. But, there was still so much that could go wrong.
